Skiing Lake Inari

January 2026 has been quite cold in the Ivalo area with multiple days below -20 and even below -30 degrees. Hence, Lake Inari invited us to do a short 2-day skiing trip from Veskoniemi (GPS: 68.78552, 27.64611) to the Mahlatti Hut (GPS: 68.866031, 27.543210), a small hut on an island north-west of Veskoniemi.

We followed the snow mobile trails left of the Mahlatti island which is a longer trail in the end (took us around 5 hours in total with breaks etc.). On the 2nd day, we took the direct trail south-east towards Veskoniemi (3 hours in total). #protip: You can even do ice skating close to the harbor of Veskoniemi.

The Inari Lake and the greater Ivalo region (see here, or here) is an amazing place in all times of the year. Skiing over a frozen lake with millions of liters of water below you is a special feeling, I promise.
