In May 2015, I spent an extended weekend in Paraty, Brazil, to do some jungle hiking with a friend near the shore.
We started the trip in Paraty, Brazil, a touristic town located at the shore between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In order to get to our starting point we hired a speed board driver since we wanted to hike back to Paraty. But you can easily change the route so that this won’t be necessary.
On the hike, there are plenty of nice beaches, some of them also have kiosks / restaurants where you can resupply with food. Water can be taken from some rivers on the way, however filtering is recommended.
In total, the trip took us 4-5 days, but you can extend it with additional routes - take the touristic map as a starting point and don’t forget to think about packrafting combinations as well.
We slept in a tent but it was way too hot. I recommend a lightweight mosquito-dome instead depending on the weather forecast. Also, a sleeping bag was not needed - an inlet is recommended depending on the weather situation. Take care that you only camp in areas where permitted. If you are unsure, ask locals for places to camp. Basic Portugues language skills are strongle recommended.
We were wearing gaiters up to the knees most of the time although we got told that there are hardly poisonous snakes. There is a high probability to meet day hikers on the different trails around Paraty.
