In March 2016, I spent some time in the “Torres del Paine National Park” (TdP) in Chile. The park offers plenty of possibilities for hiking and a well maintained hiking infrastructure.

The Annapurna Circuit with its wonderful and constantly changing landscape and nature, represented an excellent diversion after months in the deserts of South America. Although it cannot be considered as a lonely wilderness trail due to its well established infrastructure, it provides amazing views combined with an interesting cultural experience.

The Salkantay Trail (Camino del Inca Salkantay) near Cusco, Peru, is a popular alternative to the overrun Inca Trail (Camino del Inca) both leading up to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. Since the Inca Trail is regulated and mostly booked out for several months ahead, people switch to the “not yet” flooded Salkantay alternative offered by various agencies in Cusco and Peru in general.
